My brother phoned me this week (Hi Phil).  “I’ve bought a camera” he says.  “Will you show me the basics of how to get started?”

He turned up at my house with a new Nikon compact.  A small camera that packs plenty of features, including a decent zoom lens and HD video recording.  Fumbling my way around its buttons and menus, I reflected that I much prefer bigger, heavier cameras.  One of the first things I did when I bought my last DSLR was to buy the accompanying battery grip, not only for the dual batteries, but because I just like the heft and solid feel of a heavier camera.  It just feels ‘better’ in the hand for me.

Over recent years I think there has been a trend for manufacturers to battle with each other to make cameras and other devices smaller and more compact.  Is that changing now?  Recent smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 demonstrate that there is a demand for larger devices.  Maybe we’ll see the return of mobile phones the size of house bricks like in the 1980s and 90s  🙂

This week I’ve been processing some more of the images from my last shoot with Melissa, so here’s a few more (click to enlarge).  Please feel free to comment.
